Foundation Degree (FdA) in Contemporary Circus and Physical Performance
This two year, full-time course, run in partnership with Bath Spa University*, explores circus techniques to create new forms of physical performance incorporating theatre, dance and cabaret. With a central emphasis on practical creativity and breadth of styles rather than intense specialisation, students will locate circus disciplines in their historical and contemporary contexts. They will also learn how to manage themselves as professionals, promote their own work and perform in a range of formats and environments.
The aims of the first year are to enable students to discover and develop:
A solid technical foundation in their chosen skill area.
Optimum performance range.
Devising and choreographic skills.
Optimum fitness potential.
Understanding of the cultural and commercial context.
Course Structure
The course is comprised of five main areas.
1) Specialist Choices (Acrobatics, Aerial, Equilibristics & Manipulation or Physical Theatre).
2) Performance, Movement, Voice and Creative Studies.
3) Body Training.
4) Complementary Studies - including Practical, Technical and Academic Theory.
5) Practice and Evaluations.
The second year aims to broaden a student's range of styles, techniques and understanding, helping them to reinterpret work through different mediums and for different audiences whilst allowing students not only to build up a diverse portfolio of work but to create a specific act or piece of work over an extended period. The course will also build on their understanding of the performing arts sector to understand how to promote and stage their own work and to manage themselves. This will also include some basic teacher training.
